TR Aldosis 1000 mg

TR Aldosis is Sodium Bicarbonate tablets which is used as an alkalinizing agent in the treatment of metabolic acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate also may be used as an alkalinizing agent in advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the treatment of certain intoxications (e.g., methyl alcohol, phenobarbital, salicylates) to decrease renal reabsorption of the drug or to correct acidosis.

Sodium Bicarbonate also is used to increase urinary pH in order to increase the solubility of certain weak acids (e.g., cystine, sulfonamides, uric acid) or in the treatment of hemolytic reactions requiring alkalinization of the urine to diminish the nephrotoxic effects of blood pigments. In addition, the drug is used in the treatment of severe diarrhea accompanied by substantial GI bicarbonate loss and as an adjunct in the treatment of hyperkalemia to induce the cellular uptake of potassium and return the ratio of intracellular to extra cellular potassium concentration toward normal.

Category: Electrolyte Imbalance

Indication

TR Aldosis (Sodium bicarbonate) is used for the treatment of metabolic acidosis which may occur in severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal circulation of blood, cardiac arrest and severe primary lactic acidosis. Also is indicated in severe diarrhea which is often accompanied by a significant loss of bicarbonate. Further indicated in the treatment of certain drug intoxications, including barbiturates (where dissociation of the barbiturateprotein complex is desired), in poisoning by salicylates or methyl alcohol and in hemolytic reactions requiring alkalinization of the urine to diminish nephrotoxicity of blood pigments.

Mechanism of action

Sodium bicarbonate is a systemic alkalizer, which increases plasma bicarbonate, buffers excess hydrogen ion concentration, and raises blood pH, thereby reversing the clinical manifestations of acidosis. It is also a urinary alkalizer, increasing the excretion of free bicarbonate ions in the urine, thus effectively raising the urinary pH. By maintaining an alkaline urine, the actual dissolution of uric acid stones may be accomplished. Sodium bicarbonate acts as an antacid and reacts chemically to neutralize or buffer existing quantities of stomach acid but has no direct effect on its output. This action results in increased pH value of stomach contents, thus providing relief of hyperacidity symptoms.

Dosing

The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. The following information includes only the average doses of this medicine. If your dose is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

The amount of medicine that you take depends on the strength of the medicine. Also, the number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine.

  • For Sodium Bicarbonate ( TR Aldosis ) tablets:
    • To relieve heartburn or sour stomach:
      • Adults and teenagers—325 milligrams (mg) to 2 grams one to four times a day.
      • Children up to 6 years of age—Dose must be determined by your doctor.
      • Children 6 to 12 years of age—The dose is 520 mg. The dose may be repeated in thirty minutes.
    • To make the urine more alkaline (less acidic):
      • Adults and teenagers—At first, four grams, then 1 to 2 grams every four hours. However, the dose is usually not more than 16 grams a day.
      • Children—The dose is based on body weight and must be determined by your doctor. The usual dose is 23 to 230 mg per kilogram (kg) (10.5 to 105 mg per pound) of body weight a day. Your doctor may change the dose if needed.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.
